Maintaining a Credit Score

By Brandon Koll | Last Updated 8/23/2025

If you have ever went to finance something like a car, you know how important a credit score can be. A good score can save you a lot of money in interest. For me this credit score system seems completely broken. In my opinion, there are not enough data points considered to have it make sense. Let’s investigate the credit score and some of the benefits and other ways around it.

Don’t do it

The name of the credit score is a poor choice of words to me. It really should be called the debt score, because it is based on how well you pay your debts. It doesn’t seem to care about your income or how well you pay your utility bills. With the logic of a credit score, they would rather give money to someone with a lot of debt than someone that is debt free with millions of dollars in the bank.  With that said there are some benefits to a good credit score, so we can look at those first before looking at the no credit score side of things.

Some benefits to a good score

If you happen to have a good credit score, it can make a lot of purchases easier. Financing a car is really easy with good credit.  When you go to rent an apartment, a good credit score is going to make that a lot easier as well.  Getting a business loan is going to be a ton easier with a good credit score. Finally, buying a house can be much easier with a good credit score.

Benefits to having a credit card

One of the ways that I maintain a credit score is by having a credit card.  In my opinion, credit cards are a total rip off if you don’t pay them off every month.  When you pay them off every month, they can make things convenient.  One of the biggest perks are all the reward points that you can get. On top of that it can make things like renting a car much simpler. With super high interest rates, credit cards are not a great option but can be used to your favor.

What happens when you stop using credit

So, what happens if you stop using credit cards and credit all together.  One purchase that a credit card makes easier is renting a car.  This can also be done with a debit card, but the rental company may put a hold onto some of your money for incidentals.  What about buying a car.  You can always do that in the old-fashioned way and pay cash for it. Yes, you may need to save up for it.  I have my older daughters pay themselves a monthly car payment into an investment account or high yield savings.  Then they can pay cash when they need a new/newer car.

What happens when you go to rent a place

Another difficult thing to do without a credit score is to rent a place. When you go to rent an apartment, they are quick to run your credit report. When they see you don’t have a score it could scare away some of them. You can offer to show them proof of income, payment history for some bills, and even provide references.  They may also require you to pay more money upfront for a deposit, or multiple months of rent up front. Either way, it is possible to find a good rental without a credit score. How about buying a house?

Buying a house

Buying a house with no credit score is possible, but it could limit the amount of banks that will do the loan. For this they will have to do manual underwriting to verify you have a steady income and pay your bills. A lot of banks have automated the process with credit scores and are not willing to go through this process.  After the manual underwriting you can qualify for interest rates that are just as good as someone with a high credit score. Yes, it will take a little bit longer, but you can still buy a house without having a credit score.

Keeping your money and not playing the game

As you can see, you can go through your financial life without playing the credit score game.  You don’t have to finance things and continue to go into debt. How about getting out of this scam that the banks and credit card companies love so much.  Instead of giving them interest, be patient, put money away and earn your own interest until you are ready to buy.  Just think about how much more buying power you will have doing things this way.

Finance Hack – Never buy anything with credit and never have any debt!

Hopefully you can see that living without a debt score is possible. It is okay to go about life without having debt and earning interest from your money instead of paying it.  Anything is possible without that credit score, it just requires a little more research.
